The Baikal-Amur Mainline (The BAM) is one of the largest railway lines in the world. The main Taishet - Sovetskaya Gavan route was built with massive delays from 1938 to 1984. The construction of the central part of the railway, which took place in difficult geological and climatic conditions, took more than 12 years. The BAM is almost 500 km shorter than the Trans-Siberian Railway in the section from Taishet to the seaport of Vanino. The BAM was built as a strategic alternative route to the Trans-Siberian Railway, especially along the vulnerable sections close to the border with China. As of 2019, the two main routes are laid on 25% of the total length of the highway, amounting to 4300 km. The Baikal-Amur Mainline was designed as an integral part of the umbrella project for the development of significant natural resources of the areas alongside the road. It was originally planned to build 9 (according to other sources - 11) industrial and territorial complexes, but in the end only one was built - the Yuzhno-Yakut Coal Complex, including the Neryungri Coal Mine. Today, taking a train journey around BAM is the cherished dream of a "backpacker". We will help you make this dream come true. Starting your journey in Khabarovsk, you will visit the following cities: - Komsomolsk-on-Amur – where can be found the largest aircraft-manufacturing company in Russia; - seaport of Vanino; - Tynda - the capital of The BAM, the city of gold miners and Evenk reindeer breeders; - Neryungri (southern Yakutia) with its famous coal mine; - Severobaykalsk and The Lake Baikal! The length of the route is more than 4000 kilometers! Stopping in new places, you will see and feel the severity of climate and nature! But, as the Russian proverb says: "The colder the climate, the warmer the heart." People living in the countryside, especially in the northern part, are known for their hospitality ...
