Day 1 ARRIVAL IN ANADYR

Upon your arrival at the Anadyr airport (the administrative center of Chukotka) we will meet you, help you to pass the procedure of entering the border territory, and organize a transfer on a ferry to the city of Anadyr.

After checking in the hotel or apartment of your choice for the tour, we suggest you get acquainted with the city, its history present and past. During a tour of the city and its environs, you will visit the monuments and learn a lot about famous personalities: Grinevetsky, Rytkheu, Mandrikov.

For dinner, we offer a degustation of red fish, caviar and other local delicacies.

At the end of the day you’ll get a chance to listen to a story about local rituals and traditions, and participate in the ceremony of «feeding spirits».

Day 2 ARRIVAL IN LORINO.

Breakfast, transfer on a ferry across the estuary to the airport. A domestic flight Anadyr - Lavrentiya,

A car ride in Lorino village (40 km, 1 hour), photographing the tundra along the way.

Make yourself at home in the apartment where you will spend the next three days of the tour in Lorino!

Dinner - home-made local cuisine. Ethnographer's lecture on the history of whaling.

 

Day 3 LORINO. WHALERS.

After rich Chukchi breakfast, you will go on a boat trip to watch gray whales and learn about whaling and prey sharing by locals. Whales are the main source of food in the long cold Chukchi winter. Therefore, whales are truly the breadwinners of Chukotka; they are considered sacred and are connected with many rituals and cultural specificities.

Lunch out of the meat of the marine animals.

Walking tour in the village of Lorino. After dinner - Lecture on the history of the development of Chukotka.

 

Day 4 LORINO. BONE CARVERS. HOT SPRINGS.

After breakfast, you will visit the underground freeze box – a storage of meat and other products of local residents, it’s like a natural refrigerator in permafrost. Then, an excursion to the bone carving studio with a workshop on “bone carving”. Those who wish can order souvenirs right away.

After lunch - a trip to the Lorinsky hot springs, a picnic, bathing in the springs, return to Lorino.

Meeting with representatives of the Eskimo and Chukchi cultures, discussion on issues of intercultural interaction. A chat with the members of the folklore group (optional).

 

Day 5 VISITING THE REINDEER BREEDERS.

Excursion by boat or all-terrain vehicles to the reindeer herding brigade (Neshkan or Lorin brigade, depending on the location of the nomads). Photographing the tundra along the route.

Arrival at the camp, meeting with reindeer herders, exchanging gifts. A trip to the herd. Ritual slaughter of a deer.

Dinner from traditional simple dishes of reindeer herders, a workshop on cooking venison dishes.

A chat with the reindeer herders, campfire stories about life in the tundra.

Arcane throwing workshop. Lecture on the traditional exchange between reindeer herders and hunters of marine animals, which is an integral part of the Chukchi ethnic culture.

You will be back in Lorino late in the evening.

 

Day 6 THE BERING STRAIT

If the weather is good, a day trip to Cape Dezhnev and the village of Uelen.

Picnic at the old village of Naukan.

A visit to the lighthouse and the monument of Semyon Dezhnev - a Russian explorer who first passed through the Bering Strait (1648), separating Asia from North America. It was 80 years before Vitus Bering did it, in whose honor the strait was named.

 

Day 7 THE HUNTERS OF MARINE ANIMALS OF AKKANI

Early departure to the old settlement of Akkani to get acquainted with the life of the Akkani hunters of marine animals.

Demonstration of the traditional hunting of the indigenous people of Chukotka for pinnipeds (walrus),

Demonstration of traditional pinnipeds carcass butchering, the degustation of ready-made dishes of walrus meat, mushrooms and berries, a walk around the village. Storytelling about local spirits. The traditional beliefs of the Chukchi are associated with animism – a belief in spirits of nature that resembles the Shinto cult in Japan.

Late evening return to Lorino or overnight in Akkani.

 

Day 8 THE HOLIDAY OF THE HUNTERS OF MARINE ANIMALS

Participation in the whalers contest: throwing a harpoon, rowing on a walrus skin canoe, tying knots. If possible - combination with the festival of the hunters of marine animals "Beringia". Shopping for souvenirs, visiting a banya (a steam bath), and an informal chat with hunters.

Farewell dinner, overnight in Lorino.

 

Day 9 TRANSFER TO CAPE LAVRENTIYA – ANADYR

Early in the morning after breakfast, you will visit the office of the territorial neighboring commune of the hunters of marine animals during the morning meeting. Farewell to the hunters.

Transfer to Lavrentiya Airport, departure to Anadyr on a domestic flight.

Upon arrival at Anadyr Airport (while you have not crossed the river by ferry yet), we offer a unique opportunity to watch salmon fishing.

Lunch - a picnic on the beach. Caviar purchasing.

Transfer on a ferry to the city, accommodation in a hotel (apartment), dinner.

 

Day 10 ANADYR

A visit to the Museum center «Chukotka heritage» in Anadyr.

A visit to the souvenir shop or the tailoring shop with national clothes.

Shopping for memorable souvenirs.

Farewell dinner, exchange of impressions, and at the end of the tour, it's time to relax and enjoy a folk concert during dinner in the restaurant (throat singing and/or dancing).

 

Day 11 ANADYR - GUDYM - END OF THE TOUR

Breakfast. Transfer on a ferry across the estuary.

Optional (if you’ll have a late flight from Anadyr) - Excursion to the abandoned military base Gudym. There you will have a field ration lunch.

The end of the tour, departure from Anadyr.
